Site Notes
The Village of Green Oaks built and maintains the trails on this site. The Township granted the Village a perpetual easement along the trail corridor on April 25, 1994. In June of 2000, the agreement was modified to allow the Village to significantly extend the trail system. Once this work was completed, the Village was granted an additional perpetual easement on November 4, 2002, over the newly created trail corridors.
Ecological Description (Applied Ecological Services, Inc. 1997)
Much of this property (90%) occupies level mineral soils that are somewhat to poorly drained silt loam and silt clays. Formerly open, old fields and open savanna communities have become dense tangles of multiflora rose and buckthorn, with a recently developed canopy of cottonwood and American elm. Open areas adjacent to trail that transverse the north and eastern portions support native wet prairie and sedge meadows species, including many sedges, rushes, and forbs. A heavy buckthorn invasion in this parcel is a management issue. However, the relative diversity of the open areas suggests the entire parcel would likely respond quickly with management. Most of the parcel is surrounded by residential development. A nursery borders some of the western boundary.
